Karen Offutt - U.S. Army Vietnam
Receiving Certificate in lieu of:
Soldier's Medal for life saving action. .
General B.G. Bautz presenting certificate.

In January 1970, I was to be given the Soldier's Medal for heroic action. My paperwork states I was the only American woman to pull many people from a hamlet fire. I mention this NOT because I consider myself a hero but because I never received the medal. I was told at that time that "women just did not receive the Soldier's Medal". I was given a "Certificate of Appreciation" instead. It shows the inequities of being a female in the service, even though I went to Vietnam knowing I might very well never return. I do hope that things have changed for women in uniform today.

On 07 APR 01 at two PM after my speech at The Moving Wall in Fl. in a surprise ceremony, I was awarded The Soldiers Medal. Karen Offutt
