Specialist Gary W. Crask, 317 Engineer Battalion, Company B, was the first Central Illinois casualty of the Persian Gulf War. He died on the border of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, in a bunker accident. He was only twenty-one years old when he died so he doesn't have a long list of awards. He went into the military right out of high school and he wore the uniform proudly. He graduated with honors from basic at Fort Leonardwood, Mo. and spent his entire tour of duty at Camp Eshborn, Frankfort, Germany. He should have been discharged in September of 1990 but was extended because of the Middle East situation. He died in Saudi Arabia, 19 January 1991. He was an Illinois boy born in Mt. Vernon, grew up in Central Illinois and was buried in Wayne City.

Gary's Grandfather Ora Vernon Evans; S2C SV6 USNR; he served on ESNTS Great Lakes, Il and USNCTC Davisville, RI, 58th NCB. He went to Okinawa during WWII. From 21 March 1945 to 21 November 1945.


Gary's Uncle Vernon Leon Evans U.S. Army E-4 18 months in Saigon, VietNam in 1968 and 1969.
